Poetic Exhortation

THE ACTUAL LOSS

My identity had already been taken,

But I didn't know until I was awakened,

I had to do an inventory of all of my loss,

Then I started counting up all the costs,

While I kept searching to find the real me,

And confirm the true source of my identity.

The Writer's Block

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?: NON-FICTION VS. FICTION

As an aspiring author, you need to decide if your book will be "non-fiction" or "fiction" before you start writing.  Since the subject of your book may depend on your selection, you should know the difference between the terms.  Simply state, non-fiction is true, and fiction is not true.  While non-fiction typically focuses on ideas or events that actually occurred, fiction tends to focus on imaginary ideas or events.  Non-fiction usually deals with real people, but fiction involves created characters.  For example, if a book gives an account of things that have happened in real places, then it would be non-fiction. However, if the book is based on a make believe place, then it would be fiction.

A big difference is that fiction is a made up story, and non-fiction is based on facts.  A fiction writer creates "fiction" based on his or her imagination and can be creative when telling his or her story.  On the contrary, a non-fiction writer does not create "non-fiction," but rather writes based on actual facts that can be proven or verified.  Fiction is usually intended for entertainment purposes, but non-fiction tends to be more informative and educational.  Examples of non-fiction include:  biographies, documentaries, histories, textbooks, journals and travel guides.  Most novels, short stories, and films would fall in the category of fiction.
